Honda to keep on investing in India despite slumping car market

Honda Motor India is not worried over the continuous slump in the domestic car market, the auto giant’s India head Hironori Kanayama said.

Earlier this month, Honda announced its decision to spend Rs 25 billion to double its production capacity in India to 240,000 cars per year by the year 2014.

Many questioned rationale behind making the huge investment, given the market is enduring its worst sag in more than a decade. Car sales slipped 7 per cent in the last financial year.

Honda Motor Co (HMC) aims to surpass erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp to become India's number one two-wheeler manufacturer over the next three years.

Japan-based automobile giant Honda operates in India through a wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI). It is now planning to focus on entry-level sub-125cc motorcycles in the coming years to challenge Hero's models like Passion and Splendor.

Shinji Aoyama, operating officer for the company's motorcycle business, said that HMSI would be able to edge past Hero MotoCorp by 2015-16.
