Blackberry signs 5-year deal with Foxconn

BlackBerry Ltd on Friday announced a five-year partnership with Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Co Ltd to build low-end devices for sale emerging markets.

The deal is unconventional in the sense that BlackBerry will not pay upfront for components used in the phones made on its behalf by Foxconn. Instead, the Taiwanese electronics maker will take a share of profit that will be generated by the sale of each device in return for assuming responsibility for inventory management.

Apple is once again facing the heat of workers’ dissatisfaction at Foxconn- the Cupertino, Calif.-based gadgets maker’s manufacturing partner.

Around 200 Foxconn workers yesterday threatened that they would commit suicide by jumping off the factory roof in case disputes over wages and working conditions were not resolved by the management.

The protest erupted less than a month after Foxconn and Apple promised to reform the wages and workplace conditions at the China-based giant electronics manufacturer.

The recent set of suicides at the Foxconn plant in China has provoked the Chinese government to launch an investigation into the matter. The plant is the center for the manufacturing of Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The suicides are suspected to be due to the wages workers receive and the Taiwan based company has proposed to look into the matter and provide better wages for the workers.
