Blackstone hikes its stake in MCX to 4.99%

Private equity giant Blackstone on Monday further increased its stake in Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) of India by acquiring Merrill Lynch's remaining stake in the exchange.

Blackstone GPV Capital Partners (Mauritius) VI FII Ltd bought 14,22,245 shares from Merrill Lynch at an average price of Rs 573 apiece. In other words, the private equity giant bought 2.79 per cent stake in the exchange from Merrill Lynch.

Blackstone buys 12.5% in Monnet power

Global private equity giant Blackstone Group on Friday said that the firm has bought 12.5 per cent stake in Indian power producer Monnet Power Company (MPC) for Rs. 275 crore.

Incorporated in 2006 the Raipur, Chhatisgarh-based MPC is a part of Monnet Ispat and Energy and it is currently developing a coal-fired power plant with over a thousand megawatt capacity in Orissa, a company statement said. The deal is finalized valuing MPC at Rs. 2,200 crore.

The sources of this information come from people who are a part of this deal who refuse to reveal their identity and there is speculation that the deal might not even proceed any further. TPG and Thomas H. Lee refused to comment and so did Blackstone and Fidelity National spokesperson in regard to the transaction.

Blackstone Invests Around Rs 400 Crore In NSL

Worldwide investor, Blackstone has announced that it has decided to invest around USD 80-million (about Rs 400-crore) in Hyderabad-based hybrid-seed conglomerate NSL Seeds.

NSL Seeds is the parent company of the NSL Group, which mainly deals in R&D, production and selling of seeds.

According to sources, the investment will facilitate the latter to fuel its growth plans.

The sources further revealed that the investment of US$-80 million in NSL would be done in the first week of April, 2009.

Shriram EPC acquires 55% stake in Blackstone Group Technologies

Chennai-based Shriram EPC Limited (SEPC) has acquired a 55% stake in Blackstone Group Technologies (BGT) for undisclosed amount.

BGT is an engineering consulting firm which offers high value design and engineering services. The latest 55% share of the company has been sold by the company founder promoter Ashref Hashim, a US-based non-resident Indian.
