Amazon gains 1M new Prime members within a week

Amazon, the world's most popular online retailer, has claimed that it gained around a million Prime members just within a week of December this year.

The online retail giant even claimed that the $79 Amazon Prime membership was signed up by so many people in the third week of December that it had limit the sign ups avoid a slow down in the system.

As per a recent estimate by analysts, Amazon's Prime service, which offers all-you-can-eat free two-day delivery on millions of eligible items, has nearly 20 million users around the globe.

The company said in a press release, "Amazon Prime membership continues to grow and we now have tens of millions of members worldwide. They benefit from all-you-can-eat free two-day shipping on millions of eligible items and our members have a voracious appetite."

Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder & chief executive officer, said the company was extremely grateful to all of its customers around the globe. He also wished everyone the very best for the New Year.

The company also disclosed some other interesting figures. On Cyber Monday, customers placed ordered for more than 36.8 million items around the globe. It other word's customers placed orders for 426 items per second. More than 50 per cent of all those items by Amazon customers were made through a mobile device.
