Large number of workers value jobs that don’t demand fixed hours: Vince Cable

Liberal Democrat Business Secretary Vince Cable has rejected the proposal to provide workers on zero-hours contracts with a legal right to a fixed-hours deal after twelve months with the same company/employer.

The Labour Party had proposed that people who are working under zero-hours contracts should be guaranteed a legal right to a fixed-hours contract with their employer after a year.

Nest disabling a faulty feature on its Protect smoke alarm

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Nest Labs has confirmed that it is disabling a feature on its popular Nest Protect smoke alarm due to the risk that users could unintentionally turn off the alarm with the wave of a hand.

The Google-owned company's Nest Wave technology allows owners to turn off the smoke plus carbon monoxide alarm from a distance. However, the company's researchers found in recent laboratory test that a unique combination of circumstances could cause the feature to become accidentally activated.

Facebook’s new face recognition system is as accurate as human

Social-networking giant Facebook's new face-recognition system, dubbed DeepFace, is said to be as accurate in detecting a face as humans.

DeepFace is a complex artificial intelligence system that can render a 3-dimensional (3D) model of any given human face and can recognize it on account of its availability on the social network.

As per Facebook researchers, the new face recognition system can identify a human face correctly from the two given photographs 97.25 per cent of the time, which is very close to a human's face-recognition ability of 97.53 per cent.

EU member states determined to end roaming charges

Ex-Microsoft employee pleads guilty to leaking trade secrets

A former senior architect at Microsoft accused of leaking the company's trade secrets to a blogger has finally pleaded guilty to the charges.

Alex Kibkalo was last month accused of stealing and leaking early copies of Windows 8 operating system to a French blogger in August 2012.

According to the Redmond-based software giant, Kibkalo leaked information about Windows 8 RT software updates and the Activation Server software development kit (SDK).

New jobs at Ford's Lima Engine Plant will provide a major boost to the community, Vice President of the United Auto Workers (UAW) Jimmy Settles said.

Automobile giant Ford on Friday announced its plans to spend $500 million to upgrade its Ohio-based Lima engine manufacturing facility to enable to produce the new 2.7-liter 6-cylinder EcoBoost engine. The planned investment will generate nearly 300 new jobs at the plant, which already employs nearly 800 people.
